Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation: The magazine cover is a photographic image of a man standing bolding and looking directly at the camera. It is a medium long shot showing from his head right down to his waist. He is holding books in his hand which gives an impression that he is studious, his stature is very confident as he is smiling and he is standing firmly. The background is dark with a hint of grey, and the photograph covers up the body of the magazine. Behind the man is the “college” masthead, there are various cover lines in white and lime, a bar code at the bottom left corner and a college website.

Connotation: The meaning attached to the photograph image of the man is to give a very studious and hardworking student because of the books that he is carrying, His costume also makes him look smart as his clothes look neat and presentable also his costume is very modern which appeals to a more younger audience. He is wearing a cross which could emphasise that he is of a religious background, his smile shows may imply that he enjoys his study as he looks happy and his posture brings a more welcoming and approachable feeling towards the audience reading the magazine .

Costume: His costume is very modern casual but yet smart as he is wearing a smart jacket, a white V-neck t-shirt and dark jeans. The way he is dressed giving of a feeling of a very friendly person as he looks neat and presentable. He is wearing a cross to show that he is off a religious background which people can relate to, his shirt is tucked in to show a smart neat person who is willing to work as he is also holding books. This costume has been chosen carefully to appeal to a younger audience for the magazine

Props: He is holding books of “law, business and society”, this shows that he is smart, he wants to get involved in the society and also he wants to study business. The holding of books shows that he is very studious and educated which shows that he is heading to have a bright future and be successful.

Setting: There is only a little amount of setting; however the black and grey background connotes the studious image of the man, the setting doesn’t have any drawbacks as the image of the man is still the main focus of the magazine.

Lighting: The lighting is high key as the light reflects of a dark background making the image quite even and free from dark shadows.

Non-Verbal communication: The non-verbal communication shown is the smile of the man, it gives a very friendly look and also a look that he enjoys his studies as he is holding a book. His posture is very welcoming as he is standing boldly.

Induction: Movie poster textual analysis

Denotation- The image is of a man set for adventure; he is standing boldly and holding a whip. The man is standing in front of a cave which may imply that he had been looking for something inside, he may be an archaeologist due to his clothing and the props he is carrying and also because of the setting he is in.

Connotation- The meaning attached to his gun and whip is a sense of protection, as he looks like he is going to get into danger hence the reason for him carrying these two items, His costume presents an aspect of a hard working man as his clothes are dirty and also as he is coming out a cave and because of the way he is dressed and what he is carrying, he looks like an adventorous archaeologist. Him standing at the bottom of the stairs could represent that he is just about to eneter or has just finished coming out of the cave. The skull behind him represents an atmosphere of danger, his clentched fist and posture represent that he is meant for action and he is not going to back down from a fight or a challenge.

Props- He has a whip, a side bag and a gun which means that this would be used for protection as he is going to get in danger by the way he is used and the props he is using.

Lighting- The lighting is bright at the back but cold and dull in front, this shows that something bad is going to happen as it creates a very dark and gloomy effect but also a optimistical one as the light reflecting is very bright.

Costume- He dressed like a warrior, his costume is quite dark, his dressed very old fashioned as his clothes are very basic, his sleeves rolled up and his buttons undone means that he is going on and adventure, he clothes are dirty which represents that he is very hardworking.

Setting- Outside a cave, the skull in the back is creating a sense of death there are ancient carvings around the ends of the cave which gives a very historical aspect, the skull emphasises danger, He is just leaving out of the cave as he is at the bottom of the steps.

Anchorage- The title emphasises that it is more action adventure and also more comic like as the title starts off big and then gradually decreases, they use a sans serif font to create a sense of a comic like movie

Induction: Re-creation of a movie magazine front cover

This is the 1st time I have used Photoshop so it was a little bit difficult familiarising with the tools and also knowing what to do. In order to do this I had to learn quickly and try adapt to using it as it was a new software I hadn’t used before.

Once getting started I found out that everything was made in layers, so it was difficult getting used to it as I had to go back and forth to edit or move anything I wanted to change. I had to learn new tools in order to complete the movie magazine like the magic tool this helped me edit any area I didn’t want, the selection tool this helped me to select any are I needed to edit, the eye dropper tool, this helped me to select colours effectively and also the text tool, this helped me to input text into my movie magazine and make it more alike like the original magazine.
